ANSWER

I remember vividly that about 10 years ago, I used to make kimbap, which is a Korean dish made from cooked rice and ingredients such as vegetables, fish, and meats that are rolled in dried sheets of seaweed, for my boyfriend, who is my husband now, for his birthday.

Actually, I don’t have any cooking skills. But because of his birthday, I wanted to make something special for him instead of buying a gift. I wanted to do it by myself to express my affection for my boyfriend. So I thought it was really meaningful for him and me as well.

I went to a supermarket to buy some ingredients and vegetables, as well as salmon and seaweed.

Actually, that was the first time I made kimbap, so I didn’t know how to make it. So I looked it up on the internet and followed the recipe.

I admit that it is straightforward for everyone, but it was not an easy task because it requires a lot of patience and elaborateness as well. so it took me nearly 3 hours to finish it.

Then I sliced the kimbap into bite-size pieces and decorated it. Then I put them in a nice box.

When I received my box as a gift, my husband was really excited and curious about what it contained. When opening it, he was really taken aback and ecstatic because I hardly cook, but I spent a lot of time making this. S

He really appreciated my gift and gave me a warm hug to show his appreciation for me. We were really happy, and that’s an unforgettable memory for us.

  1. What are some things that people make by hand, not by machine?

This is a tough question because machines can do anything we do. But I think that, apart from the kimbap, like I just mentioned, there are many foods, paintings, and even jewelry that we can do manually without a machine.

  1. Is this always true?

No, not really, because machines can make anything these days.

  1. How are hand-made objects better than those made by machines?

Hand-made objects are even better than those made by machines because they’re original and unique. Like the kimbap, I made for my husband. I’m sure that it is not like any kimbaps in the world.

  1. How are machine-made objects better?

Since technology has advanced so much during the last decades, like smartphones, It’s lighter and operates faster, and we can have sharper photos compared to in the past.

  1. Where can people purchase quality handmade merchandise?

I reckon that people can buy quality handmade objects in specialty stores, art stores, or even on the internet. They have tons of things, like paintings and clothes, that are original and traditional.

  1. Can you elaborate?

Yes, of course. There are a variety of galleries quite near my apartment on Tran Phu Street, in District 5. They sell original paintings from many artists in Minnesota.

  1. Is it better to buy a gift?

It depends on

If we have sufficient time to make gifts, it’s absolutely a special gift because they make it with their heart and dedication, so it’s really meaningful.

But if we don’t have time to make it manually, it will be a waste of time.

  1. If someone spent more time making gifts instead of buying them, how would that affect society?

It definitely has a big impact on society and the economy because stores will make less money and many workers will be out of jobs.

  1. How has the tradition of making gifts changed compared to before?

From my point of view, now we have more tools and advanced machines that can make exquisite and incredible gifts. My friend made a toy car for his brother by using 3D printing. This wasn’t possible in the past.
