TOPIC 22 – WORK OR STUDY

Christopher (English US)

Jenny (English US)

  1. Do you work or study?

Currently, I’m working as a TOEIC teacher. I’ve been teaching TOEIC for nearly 9 years. I am also studying IELTS to enhance my career.

  1. What do you like about your workplace or school?

Actually, I’m self-employed, and I like a lot of things about my job. Because I’m self-employed,  I have independence and freedom from my routine.

Moreover, I have golden chances to teach and meet people from all walks of life. Which is really great. I also learn a lot from their experience.

  1. How often do you work at home?

Well, I only teach from 6pm-9pm at my class. Except for that time, I work at home all the time because I have a group on Facebook called TOEIC with friends. Every single day, I need to check my group and answer any questions that members or my students ask.

  1. How often do you study at home?

I learn at home every day. For about 4-5 hours a day. I set up a goal to achieve the best score in IELTS. So I need to study hard to achieve it. But sometimes, like on the weekend, I go out to enjoy delicious food at the best restaurant near my place with my husband to let off steam and refresh my mind.

  1. Do you like working or studying at home? Why or why not?

Yes, definitely. There are several reasons

It saves money and time because I don’t have to commute to my workplace.

It’s really comfortable and convenient. I have privacy, so I can stay focused, or when I’m hungry, I just go to my fridge and eat what I want.

  1. If you are not studying or working at home, where do you go?

It’s absolutely at my workplace because it’s quite near my apartment. And it’s also quite comfortable and quiet. It’s easy for me to concentrate on my work.

  1. What are the difficulties of working or studying at home?

One of the biggest challenges is distraction. Like when my friends call me unexpectedly or I take a break and watch TikTok for quite a long time, it’s easy for me to lose track of time.

  1. How has working from home changed in the past thirty years?

The biggest difference over the past three decades has been the advent of the internet. We can work from home more efficiently. Like myself, I worked from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  1. If you could improve one part of working at home, what would it be?

The first idea that comes to mind is that I would change my laptop, as it is quite obsolete. I bought it nearly 10 years ago. So it’s really slow, and sometimes it crashes or shuts down suddenly, which really affects my work.
